Bible Prophecy - The War of Gog and Magog

July 26, 2009

Show Notes:

Reasons to believe Bible Prophecy:

1 - Prophecies that have already been fulfilled:

Major example: The First Coming of Christ Over 300 prophecies in the OT about the coming of Messiah.
These can be grouped into about 60 categories.
In an earlier broadcast we talked about the astronomical odds against these prophecies being fulfilled coincidentally. In essence, it is unthinkable.
For details on that, visit our website and listen to Is the Bible True?

2 - Important difference between Bible prophecy and other kinds
Astrology
Fortune tellers
Palm readers
Famous Prognosticators like Jeanne Dixon, Edgar Cayce, and Notradamus
Even prophecies from other holy books.

The Difference: The Bible prescribes death for false prophecy. Most of the prophets made near and far prophecies. If their near prophecies had not come true, they would have been put to death.

Deuteronomy 18:20 - "But a prophet who presumes to speak in my name anything I have not commanded him to say, or a prophet who speaks in the name of other gods, must be put to death."

3 Ė The Rebirth of Israel -1948
Ezekiel 36 & 37 -

Ezekiel 37:4-14

4 Then he said to me, "Prophesy to these bones and say to them, 'Dry bones, hear the word of the LORD! 5 This is what the Sovereign LORD says to these bones: I will make breath enter you, and you will come to life. 6 I will attach tendons to you and make flesh come upon you and cover you with skin; I will put breath in you, and you will come to life. Then you will know that I am the LORD.'"

7 So I prophesied as I was commanded. And as I was prophesying, there was a noise, a rattling sound, and the bones came together, bone to bone. 8 I looked, and tendons and flesh appeared on them and skin covered them, but there was no breath in them.

9 Then he said to me, "Prophesy to the breath; prophesy, son of man, and say to it, 'This is what the Sovereign LORD says: Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe into these slain, that they may live.'" 10 So I prophesied as he commanded me, and breath entered them; they came to life and stood up on their feet-a vast army.

11 Then he said to me: "Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel. They say, 'Our bones are dried up and our hope is gone; we are cut off.' 12 Therefore prophesy and say to them: 'This is what the Sovereign LORD says: O my people, I am going to open your graves and bring you up from them; I will bring you back to the land of Israel. 13 Then you, my people, will know that I am the LORD, when I open your graves and bring you up from them. 14 I will put my Spirit in you and you will live, and I will settle you in your own land. Then you will know that I the LORD have spoken, and I have done it, declares the LORD.'" (from New International Version)

Ezek 37:21-22

1 and say to them, 'This is what the Sovereign LORD says: I will take the Israelites out of the nations where they have gone. I will gather them from all around and bring them back into their own land. 22 I will make them one nation in the land, on the mountains of Israel. (from New International Version)

Such a thing had never happened in history, that a people who had been dispersed throughout the world for more than 2000 years would be brought back to their own land and reestablished with their own name again.

Historians have pointed out how amazing it was that world opinion would be favorable to such a thing. The persecution of the Jewish people during World War II was a major factor in the miraculous return of Godís chosen people.

On the very day that Israel announced their independence, six nations closest to them declared war against them. Nothing less than the hand of God could have given Israel victory in that first war, or in the several other wars that they have had to fight to maintain their independence.

This was one of the greatest fulfillments ever of Biblical prophecies!

Today letís look at the War of Gog and Magog.
-Ezekiel 38 & 39

Following the two chapters in Ezekiel that predicted the rebirth of Israel, are two more chapters that describe a great war of the last days, and we can see the build-up to this war in todayís headlines.

The Book of Revelation says there will be three great wars in the future. Most people only think about one of them Ė the Battle of Armageddon. But that war is at the end of the Tribulation period. There is one at the beginning also. In Revelation 6 is explained as the opening of the Second Seal. The first seal is the introduction of Antichrist on a white horse. This second one is a rider on a red horse that stands for a great and bloody war. This is most likely the same as the war of Gog and Magog that we are about to consider. The third great war will be after Christ has reigned on earth for a thousand years and the Devil is released for a little while.

Weíll just concentrate on the War of Gog and Magog today.

It is no coincidence that the events of Ezekiel 38 and 39 come right after the prophecy of the rebirth of Israel in Ezekiel 36 and 37. Here are some highlights of these two chapters:

The invaders:

Ezek 38:2-6

2 "Son of man, set your face against Gog, of the land of Magog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal; prophesy against him 3 and say: 'This is what the Sovereign LORD says: I am against you, O Gog, chief prince of Meshech and Tubal. 4 I will turn you around, put hooks in your jaws and bring you out with your whole army-your horses, your horsemen fully armed, and a great horde with large and small shields, all of them brandishing their swords. 5 Persia, Cush and Put will be with them, all with shields and helmets, 6 also Gomer with all its troops, and Beth Togarmah from the far north with all its troops-the many nations with you. (from New International Version)

Most of these names come from the 10th chapter of Genesis. After the flood, the descendants of the three sons of Noah went different directions to populate the earth. The sons of Shem stayed in what we call the Middle East today. His descendants are the Semitic people, including Israel and many of the Arabs. Most of Hamís descendants went south to Africa. And Japhethís descendants went North into what would be come Asia and Europe.

Bible scholars have usually identified Magog, Meshech, and Tubal as forefathers of Russia. In fact Meschech sounds a lot like Moscow and Tubal sounds like Tobolsk.

Their allies are Persia, which is modern Iran, Cush, which is Ethiopia, and Put, which is Lybia. Many of the inhabitants of these countries are Muslims today.

Itís interesting that Mizraim, the forefather of Egypt isnít mentioned.

That is just the sort of political alliance we see in the world today. Russia and her Islamic neighbors and Middle East nations that are against Israel.

Here is what Ezekiel says will happen during this war:

Ezek 38:7-9

7 "'Get ready; be prepared, you and all the hordes gathered about you, and take command of them. 8 After many days you will be called to arms. In future years you will invade a land that has recovered from war, whose people were gathered from many nations to the mountains of Israel, which had long been desolate. They had been brought out from the nations, and now all of them live in safety. 9 You and all your troops and the many nations with you will go up, advancing like a storm; you will be like a cloud covering the land. (from New International Version)

Ezek 38:10-12

10 "'This is what the Sovereign LORD says: On that day thoughts will come into your mind and you will devise an evil scheme. 11 You will say, "I will invade a land of unwalled villages; I will attack a peaceful and unsuspecting people-all of them living without walls and without gates and bars. 12 I will plunder and loot and turn my hand against the resettled ruins and the people gathered from the nations, rich in livestock and goods, living at the center of the land." (from New International Version)

Ezek 38:18-22

18 This is what will happen in that day: When Gog attacks the land of Israel, my hot anger will be aroused, declares the Sovereign LORD. 19 In my zeal and fiery wrath I declare that at that time there shall be a great earthquake in the land of Israel. 20 The fish of the sea, the birds of the air, the beasts of the field, every creature that moves along the ground, and all the people on the face of the earth will tremble at my presence. The mountains will be overturned, the cliffs will crumble and every wall will fall to the ground. 21 I will summon a sword against Gog on all my mountains, declares the Sovereign LORD. Every man's sword will be against his brother. 22 I will execute judgment upon him with plague and bloodshed; I will pour down torrents of rain, hailstones and burning sulfur on him and on his troops and on the many nations with him. (from New International Version)

Could this be a nuclear war?
