When he was a young man, Josh McDowell considered himself an agnostic. But he accepted a challenge to intellectually examine the claims of Christianity. The evidence led him to believe that Christianity was true. He had planned to attend law school, but after accepting Christ he decided to study for the ministry instead. He completed his college degree at Wheaton College and later attended Talbot Theological Seminary where he graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Master of Divinity degree. In 1982 McDowell was awarded an honorary Doctor of Laws degree by the Simon Greenleaf School of Law.
In 1964, McDowell joined the staff of Campus Crusade for Christ. He formed The Josh McDowell Ministry to persue the vision of reaching young people worldwide with the truth and love of Jesus Christ. Over the years, Josh has spoken to more than 10 million young people through over 23,000 talks in at least 113 countries.
In 1991, he founded Operation Carelift to meet physical and spiritual needs in orphanages, hospitals, and prisons in the countries of the former Soviet Union. Since its inception, over $46 million dollars of humanitarian aid (food, clothing, and medical supplies) has been delivered overseas.
Josh has authored or co-authored more than 100 books. He is considered one of the pre-eminent apologists of our time.
